Experimental Studies on the Erythropoietic Stimulating Factor in the Liver

Abstract
Recent experimental evidences reported by Horrigan suggested that liver may produce certain factor stimulating erythropoiesis in men and some animals.
This experiment was designed to explore such factor in the liver of rabbits. Serum and liver extract were obtained from three different groups. of animals, normal, liver damaged and anemic rabbits, and they were injected into the peritoneum of these different groups of animals respectively. For a period of, 10 days, changes of peripheral blood cells were observed.
1. In the normal rabbits, received serum and liver extract obtained from. anemic rabbits, erythrocytes, reticulocytes and hematocrit were increased, whereas: they were decreased in the normal rabbits received d serum and liver extract from liver damaged rabbits.
2. In the anemic rabbits received serum and liver extract from normal and anemic rabbits the erytrocytes, reticulocytes and hematocrit were markedly increased. Therefore rapid recovery from anemic condition was shown in these groups.
3. These experimental evidences suggest that liver may produce certain substance which probably accelerate erythropoiesis and it may interact with the inhibiting factor which in known to be produced by spleen to maintain, an equilibrium in erythropoiesis.
